Cottenham Colts Vow to Tackle Men’s Health Stigma

A Cambridgeshire football club is kicking off the conversation about men’s health.

Cottenham United Colts - who provide footballing opportunities for hundreds of boys and girls - are teaming up with Cambridge Clinical Laboratories to hold a men’s health check.

Cottenham United Men’s Football Club, Cottenham Cricket Club and Cottenham Tennis Club are also joining the initiative on Monday 11th November which will focus on prostate cancer - the most common cancer found in males.

52,000 men in the UK are diagnosed with prostate cancer annually, while one in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime:

“We are really determined to raise awareness of prostate cancer, particularly as many of our 40 coaches are men who are of the age when health issues can arise,” commented Tom Webb, Chairman of Cottenham United Colts.

“It’s also really important for us to reduce the stigma around talking openly about men’s health, both within the club and the wider community as well. We’ve been really pleased with the response.”

The mobile health clinic facilitated by Cambridge Clinical Laboratories will be on site at Cottenham Village Hall, to administer tests which check for heightened levels of PSA in men’s blood – raised levels can mean a potential prostate issue.

It is hoped this will be the first of many health initiatives in the village with events raising awareness of heart disease and alcohol related illnesses both in the pipeline.
